1. Policy statement
Ealing Cricket Club is committed to providing, so far as is reasonably practicable, a safe and healthy environment for its employees, volunteers, members, players, coaches, officials, contractors, visitors and spectators.
The Club will take proportionate measures to prevent injury and ill health arising from cricket, coaching, grounds maintenance, social activities, events and the use of Club premises. It will comply with applicable health and safety legislation and follow relevant guidance issued by the England and Wales Cricket Board, Middlesex Cricket and other competent authorities.
Health and safety is a shared responsibility. Everyone using the Club must take reasonable care of themselves and others, follow safety instructions and report hazards, accidents and near misses promptly.
This policy should be read alongside the Club's safeguarding, fire safety, emergency, first-aid, risk-assessment, alcohol-licensing and data-protection procedures.

2. Scope
This policy applies to:
• Cricket activities, including matches, training, junior sessions, holiday camps, indoor practice and one-to-one coaching.
• Club premises, including the clubhouse, changing facilities, nets, pitches, outfields, boundaries, car parks, access routes, storage areas and grounds-maintenance facilities.
• Social and commercial activities, including functions, bar operations, fundraising and community events.
• People acting for the Club, including committee members, employees, coaches, captains, officials, volunteers and contractors.

3. Responsibilities

Management Committee

The Management Committee has overall responsibility for health and safety and will:

• Provide leadership and resources for appropriate safety measures.
• Appoint competent people to coordinate health and safety, fire safety, first aid and safeguarding.
• Ensure suitable risk assessments are completed, recorded where required and reviewed.
• Monitor accidents, incidents and near misses and ensure appropriate corrective action is taken.
• Review this policy annually, and sooner after a serious incident or significant operational change.

Health and Safety Officer

The designated officer will:
• Coordinate risk assessments, inspections and action plans.
• Maintain relevant records, including accidents, checks, training and statutory inspections.
• Provide safety information to members, employees, volunteers and contractors.
• Escalate significant risks to the Management Committee.
• Liaise with emergency services, regulators and insurers when necessary.

Coaches, captains and activity leaders

Those leading cricket or other Club activities must:

• Assess conditions before and during activities, including the weather, playing surface, equipment and participants' capabilities.
• Brief participants on relevant hazards, emergency procedures and expected conduct.
• Stop or modify an activity if conditions become unsafe.
• Ensure appropriate supervision, particularly for children, young people and inexperienced players.
• Report accidents, defects and concerns promptly.

Grounds staff and authorised equipment users

Grounds personnel must:

• Use machinery only when trained, competent and authorised.
• Complete pre-use checks and follow manufacturers' instructions.
• Secure machinery, fuel, chemicals and tools against unauthorised access.
• Use suitable personal protective equipment and safe working methods.
• Keep players and members of the public away from maintenance operations.

Members, players, visitors and contractors

Everyone at the Club must:

• Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others.
• Follow Club instructions, signs and established procedures.
• Use facilities and equipment properly and avoid reckless behaviour.
• Report hazards, defects, accidents and near misses without delay.
• Cooperate with emergency evacuations and other safety measures.
Contractors must also provide evidence of competence, insurance and suitable risk assessments or method statements where appropriate.

4. Risk assessment
The Club will identify significant hazards, determine who may be harmed, evaluate existing controls and introduce further precautions where reasonably practicable.
Assessments will cover, as appropriate:

• Cricket matches, practice sessions, coaching and junior activities.
• Pitches, outfields, nets, sightscreens, covers and boundary equipment.
• Clubhouse occupancy, slips and trips, access and security.
• Fire, electricity, gas, legionella and water systems.
• Grounds machinery, manual handling, work at height and hazardous substances.
• Bar operations.
• Events, crowds, parking, deliveries and contractor activities.
• Severe weather, extreme heat, lightning and poor air quality.
• Lone working and opening or closing the premises.
• People who may require additional support, including children, disabled people, pregnant workers and those with relevant medical conditions
