Ealing kick off Gubby Allen with a comprehensive win

Ealing travelled to Chiswick for what was the first game for us in the Gubby Allen competition. Zuhayr K, our captain for the day called incorrectly at the toss and we are asked to bat first. This was a surprising call from the opposition captain considering that Chiswick would now have to bat in the fading light. However, we took full advantage of this and batted well throughout the innings. The running between the wickets was generally good. I can only remember a few occasions where some risky runs were taken and a few runs not taken which should have been. In the end we posted a commanding total of 293 from 18 overs. It was agreed by both managers midway through the first innings to reduce each innings by 2 overs. This was so that Chiswick were not handicapped too much by the fading light. Zuhayr K top scored with 24 runs, and capitalised on anything short by pulling several short balls to the boundary with immense timing and power. But there were some equally excellent shots from most batsman

We knew that at the half way stage Ealing were nicely poised. Chiswick would have to bat well to win this game and with our bowling attack, that would not be easy. There were outstanding bowling efforts throughout the innings. New boy Jamie F got us off to a wonderful start, by obtaining our first wicket in the second over. A lovely full delivery that knocked back middle stump. In our 18 overs, we only gave away 11 wides and 2 no balls. Having said that, one of the no balls came from a full toss that hit the stumps and was called a no ball for height. A very dubious decision to say the least. With the combination of seam and spin in the team, we troubled their batsman throughout. Aidan B was spinning it at right angles and the batsman had no clue how to play him. In addition to the excellent bowling, the boys were fantastic in the field. Catches win matches and ours boys didnt disappoint. Lucas Sm, who was WK for 10 overs took two catches off the bowling of Aidan B. One of the catches, a sharply judged catch taken off a thin edge. Those types of catches are never easy. Zuhayr K also took a fantastic catch at mid-off diving to his left. His celebration was equally as good as he threw the ball up in the air after taking the catch. Arvin S and Jamie F also took well judged catches where they kept their eyes firmly on the ball. At the end of the innings, Chiswick ended their innings on 242 for 7. Aidan B and Lucas Sm took two wickets apiece, with the Jamie F, Tayyab M and Jack M sharing one apiece.

What an excellent way to kick off the competition. Those winter training sessions have paid off in abundance.
