Ealing U11s vs Uxbridge (away)
Tuesday, 14th April
Ealing won by 23 runs
You could hardly have wished for a nicer evening on which to start the season. Taking a strong side to Uxbridge, against whom we've had a number of close contests in recent seasons, was an ideal opportunity to see how we'd wintered.
We were invited to bat first and runs came steadily despite losing a couple of early wickets. Harjot was particularly aggressive in muscling his way to a quick 34, well supported by Oscar and Rishab, before miscuing one. The scoring rate held through the latter stages of the innings with Ned and Jilal lumping a six each to take us up to a very creditable 93 in our 20 overs.
With the breeze and slight slope it was going to be important that the bowlers hit their lines early on. No cause for concern as Ealing bowled it down that corridor relentlessly from the off. Everyone was on the button in an exceptional bowling effort with wickets falling to Harrison (3), Ned and Alex (1). The fielding, too, was as sharp as it's ever been - witness the three run outs (two direct hits) and two catches. We also contributed to a couple of wickets in the field for them - they were a man short so we subbed in fielders to help them out, taking in a catch and causing a run-out. It all added up to a 23 run win for Ealing.
This was a phenomenally encouraging start to the season. The batting was always positive, the bowling disciplined and the fielding smart and for a first game this was a fantastic effort. Gives us a few things to work on but what it hints at is what could be achieved as we get more match time under our belts but for now all the boys should be very pleased.
Thanks to Allan for umpiring, Prabhjot for scoring and, of course, everyone for their support. League starts next week but we have more friendlies on Saturday and Sunday before that.
