Ealing U17s Win Middlesex County Cup

After having to abandon of the first attempt to play the U17 County League Finals at NPL Tedington on Bank Holiday Monday 25th August due to atrocious weather, the Finals day finally took place at NPL Teddington on 7th September with Ealing, Sunbury, Bessborough and Ickenham competing for the trophy. In the first semi-final, Sunbury defeated Ickenham by 7 wickets having restricted Ickenham to 97-7 and then reaching this target for the loss of just 3 wickets with Toby Godfray hitting 42no and Amar Verdi hitting an aggressive 49. The second semi final between Ealing and Bessborough was far closer with Bessborough looking well on track to win chasing Ealing's total of 105-9 Ealing right up to the last over but eventually falling 3 short at 101-7 leaving the final to be played between Ealing and Sunbury.

Louie Millman (33) and Sam Turner (33) got Ealing off to a strong start in the final putting on 61 for the first wicket in under 10 overs. However, once the openers fell, Ealing had a mini collapse in the middle order before some lusty blows from Benedict Chippendale (20) well supported by Arthur Godsal (26 no) saw Ealing recover to 124-6 off 20 overs. This looked like an above par score on a track of variable bounce and an outfield of very long grass . Sunbury started their reply confidently putting on 38 for the first wicket in 6 overs with Rajan Soni leading the way with a very impressive 28 before Sunbury also had a mini collapse losing 5 wickets for 20 runs to find themselves at 58-5. Sunbury then recovered thanks to Zeshan Malik (30) and Alasdair Shaw (21) who took the score to 110-5 but Sunbury was always behind the required run-rate and a target of 15 off the last over proved too big an ask with Sunbury ending up 12 runs short. Pick of the Ealing bowlers were off-spinners Benedict Chippendale (2 for 11) and Robert Bentley (3 for 23).

This left Ealing U17s to proudly receive the League Cup from Tony Ward to add to the Middlesex Development League title won the previous Sunday.
