Shepherds Bush block out for the draw

Ealing started their timed format cricket with a short trip to Shepherds Bush. After an awful week of weather, the boys were greeted with a rather predictably green wicket that looked good to bowl on, so as expected Kristian lost the toss and we were batting (thanks skip).

Oli and Shawsy had the thankless task of opening in the seamer friendly conditions and immediately the hosts took advantage. The E men found themselves in early trouble as we were reduced to 7-2, this had brought the two aussies to the crease who have had some important partnerships already this season. Unfortunately, this wasn’t to be another as both received good deliveries to leave us in a sticky situation at 44-4. Then came a brilliant counter attack from Mylo, he decided the best form of defence was attack and attack he did scoring 49 from 38 deliveries including 6x 4s and 2x 6s, one over wide long on an outrageous lofted drive over cover point. When Mylo departed to a brilliant piece of bowling from the left arm spinner, Ealing’s score had doubled, Chad and Lawsy now at the crease set about making a steady partnership. Both players batted sensibly and they reached a 50 partnership in 71 balls, together they brought the score to 151 before Lawsy was bowled for 34. Chad batting brilliantly was joined by Enso at the crease as the E men contemplated the chance of getting to 200. Chad brought up his 50 from 75 balls, a very calm and important knock from the DOC. Enso and Chad were knocking the ball around nicely and cashing in on any loose bowling from the hosts and the pair reached a 50 partnership from 73 balls with even contributions from both players. The partnership was broken on 84 when Chad departed for an excellent 66 (7x 4s) and Ealing on 235. Enso reached his 50 of 52 balls in the 56th over, he would fall for 59 (7x 4s 1x 6) with the score on 251 and that would be the final total as the last two wickets fell without a run being scored. The feeling was that the total was well above par on a wicket offering plenty for the bowlers.

After a quick turnaround the E men were out in the field chasing early wickets, Enso and Chad opened up but it was the visitors that started quickly. They raced to 20 before the first wicket fell when Enso got a bit of fortune when the bush batsmen played on. Chad was then in on the action attracting an outside edge through to Kristian who clung on in a rather ungainly manner leaving the hosts 29-2. Bush were helped by the availability of Middlesex’s Max Holden who was batting nicely and starting to find the boundary but after getting to 35 he danced down the wicket to Kristian’s off spin only to be beaten by the delivery and stumped by Mylo, a big wicket for Ealing. It was to get better for Ealing as just before tea Mungo got the 4th when a leading edge went to Lawsy at point leaving bush 59-4 at tea. The E men felt confident coming out after the break and were searching for more quick wickets but the hosts rallied and put on a good partnership for the 5th wicket which was worth 73 before Ash found the breakthrough getting the Bush skipper caught. The next over Lawsy took the 6th when Farrell held a good low catch, 133-6 now and that soon became 135-7 when Lawsy picked up his second this time with an LBW. Ealing could see the victory in their sights but the British weather would have a say in this game. As Ealing looked to kill the game, the heavens opened forcing a halt to proceedings. The players trudged off and wouldn’t be allowed back on for 45 minutes and when they were, there was only 8 overs left. Three wickets required in 8 overs was a big ask but our bowlers would give it everything. Bush came out with a determined resistance and Ealing could only force one more wicket when Chad got an LBW. That that would be it for the wickets and the game would finish as a draw with Bush finishing 152-8. Ealing would take 5 points for the winning draw but would leave frustrated and feeling they deserved more.
