Match Report: On a cloudy, chilly and damp May afternoon, Ealing travelled over to the Wilf Slack Memorial Ground looking to start their 1987 League 3rd Division campaign with a win. Having lost the toss and been inserted, Ealing made a steady start against the Highgate opening bowlers. Having seen them off, Ealing then accelerated, with the classy Sharma dispatching their first change bowler to all parts. After 20 overs, Ealing were cruising at a run a ball for the loss of only one wicket, and a big total was in the offing. However, a steady loss of wickets, including the key man Sharma for 92, ensured Ealing were bowled out for 209 in the 42nd over; a competitive score nonetheless on a slow, low wicket.
In response, Highgate made an aggressive start against the opening bowling attack of Mirza and Calder (Calder in particular). However, with Mirza bowling fast and controlled - the odd head-high beamer excepted - and holding an end up, Calder was able to reap the benefits at the other end as the Highgate batsman looked to get after him. Four wickets for Calder and one for Mirza in this opening spell left Highgate toiling on 60-5. However, anyone who knows Highgate knows they do not roll over easily, and a partnership of 50 for the six wicket left the match in the balance, with Highgate needing 5 an over with 20 overs remaining. Unfortunately for them, they hadn’t reckoned on John Lindley, whose unwavering accuracy broke the partnership, assisted by Mike Ripley taking a sharp catch at backward square leg. A steady stream of wickets, shared between Lindley and Sharma’s filthy off-spin then followed, with Dave McCarthy taking the final wicket to wrap things up for the E Men in the fading light. Amid jubillent scenes, the boys then headed back down the North Circular in fine fettle.
