Unlike last week, the morning at Brondesbury was a scorcher, perhaps the reason the spinners went down for the fourth time in five matches in warm up football, this time being trounced 4 ? 1. But on to the serious stuff, and just like the football, Holty won his fourth toss in five, having no hesitation other than the heat in inserting our hosts.
We got the perfect start too, their opening nicking the fourth ball of the innings to Chris bucket-hands Peploe at first slip to leave them 0 ? 1. This set the tone for the day, wickets coming more steadily than runs. T nicked off the other opener with a jaffer, but then it was the Kish show, picking up another five before lunch in an unchanged 19 over spell. Although the wicket was doing a bit, it was the bowlers who restricted the scoring more than anything, Kish not going for a single boundary. At 60 ? 7 off 35 overs things were definitely going our way.
Things continued after lunch, Kish bowling a further four overs, picking up number seven in his 21st over. Although he finally went for a boundary, his figures of 23 ? 9 ? 23 ? 7 will take some beating in a mighty impressive spell of bowling.
Oli came into the attack in the 46th over, his first ball of the day a wide long hop which went for four via Holty’s thumb. His second ball got rid of number nine, leaving Peps to get the last one with a thing edge through to Mylo for his fifth catch of the innings.
With just 82 to win in over seventy overs it wasn’t the tallest of orders, but when Sammy fell in the first over it needed Pat and Hawky to steer us onto the 10 point course. Both played steadily, and when Pat eventually fell, we were just 25 short of victory. Hawky opened his shoulders, lofting their captain for four over long-on to go to fifty, Mylo finishing the match with a six and a four and another 10 points to the E-Men.
