After a great win last week it was time to play perhaps our biggest rivals ? Finchley ? however thanks to the rain the only play the crowd were treated to before lunch was the seam team beating the hapless spinners 3 ? 1. Oh and Holty won the toss and put them in.

After lunch, poker and an hour of indoor cricket, play was finally underway in the gloom. After complaining about just about everything, Finchley didn’t get off to the best of starts, but this was down pretty much exclusively to tight bowling from T, Hass and Oli.

The dangerous Selwood was removed early before he could get going, and at 70-4 things were starting to turn our way. Although their captain Josh Knappett looked fluent at number five, when he fell for 32, the tail crumbled. Peps picked up seemingly the fastest five fa in history, removing the last four in the space of 12 balls, eventually all out for 139 in just 35.5 of their 38 allotted overs.

In return we knew we only needed four an over, but the early loss of Hawk, Stoughton and Wilkin made things slightly trickier. Then the rain came again and we were on and off three times in an hour, reducing our overs from 31 to 25. Peps continued smashing balls out of the ground, but when he fell for 68 to leave us 90 ? 5 we knew we would still have to work hard for the win.

However in the end this wasn’t a problem as the rain came back, cutting our overs now just to 20, scuppering our chances of the win. With four points already secure it was all about getting through our twenty overs needed to constitute a game. Even with all their procrastination and protestation, we finished our overs in time to get inside to the dry before the rain came again. Although it was our first non-win of the season, we knew that we would have stood a good chance of picking up 10 points if the weather hadn’t been against us. In the end four points was the best result we could get, keeping a safe distance from the rest of the teams at the top of the table.
