| Ealing won by 5 wickets! | |
On a lovely day for cricket, Ealing U17 squad travelled to Teddington CC to play in the final of the County Cup against Tower Hamlets CC.
On winning the toss Tower Hamlets elected to bat. They batted sensibly to get to 22 when they lost Hassan to a fine delivery by Benji Evans. There after they progressed slowly to reach 70 for 4 wickets in 18 overs. Ealing appeared to be on target to restrict Tower Hamlets to a modest total of about 160. Some poor fielding and dropped catches meant that the batsmen started to score at a much quicker rate and Ealing bowlers were jaded for a period of time. All this allowed Tower Hamlets to reach a respectable 204 for 9 wickets. Benji Evans and Gags Khurana were the pick of Ealing bowlers.
After tea, the Ealing batsmen set off on a run chase. Taz Khalid and Gags opened the innings and they progressed well until the 10th over when Gags was out, with the score on 46. Taz was joined by Jonathan Phillips and these two took the score to 91 when Taz was caught behind for a very good 51 in the 19th over. Captain Nabeel Awan joined Jonathan and some very sensible, albeit slow batting was witnessed. It was their job to see Ealing home but unfortunately Jono was out to a delivery he would have liked to dispatch over the boundary for 38, the score being 132 in the 28th over. Ealing had fallen behind with the run rate. Louie Millman and Nabeel started to build the innings following the fall of the fourth wicket and took the score to 185 when Louie was out for a most useful 19 off 20 balls. Ealing needed 14 to win off 2 overs. Nabeel decided not to delay matters and struck the first two balls of the 39th over for sixes and then completed the victory with a well run two off the third ball. He had batted superbly to play a captain's innings scoring 64no off 73 balls faced.
Thus Ealing U17s won the County Cup for the third time in five years. Well done the players!
